Interviews can be daunting, but with the right preparation, you can turn nerves into confidence and make a lasting impression. At Ainsworth Recruitment, we're here to help you shine. Here are our top tips to prepare, perform, and perfect your interview closing!

Part 1: How to Prepare for Your Interview

Preparation is key. The more you know, the more confident you'll feel.

  1. Research the Company Thoroughly:

    • Website: Explore their 'About Us' section, mission, values, recent news, and services/products.

    • Social Media: Check their LinkedIn, Twitter, etc., for recent updates and company culture insights.

    • News: Google recent articles or press releases about the company.

    • Why it matters: Show you're genuinely interested and understand their business.

  2. Understand the Role Inside Out:

    • Job Description: Re-read it carefully. Highlight key responsibilities, required skills, and desired experience.

    • Match Your Skills: Think about specific examples from your past experience that directly relate to each point in the job description.

    • Why it matters: Demonstrate you've done your homework and are a perfect fit.

  3. Research Your Interviewer(s):

    • LinkedIn: If you know who you're meeting, look up their professional background and current role.

    • Why it matters: Helps you understand their perspective and potentially find common ground.

  4. Prepare Your Questions:

    • Always have questions ready. This shows engagement and strategic thinking.

    • Good questions might include: "What does a typical day look like in this role?", "What are the biggest challenges facing this department right now?", "How do you measure success in this position?", "What opportunities are there for professional development?"

    • Why it matters: It's your chance to assess if the role and company are right for you.

  5. Plan Your Logistics:

    • Location: If in-person, plan your route, travel time, and parking. Aim to arrive 10-15 minutes early.

    • Virtual: Test your internet connection, microphone, camera, and platform (e.g., Teams, Google Meet) beforehand. Choose a quiet, well-lit space with a neutral background.

    • What to wear: Dress professionally, even for virtual interviews.

Part 2: Interview Do's and Don'ts

Making a good impression goes beyond just your answers.

DO's:

  • Arrive Early (10-15 mins): For both in-person and virtual interviews, this allows you to settle in.

  • Be Enthusiastic & Positive: Your energy is infectious. Show genuine interest in the role and company.

  • Listen Actively: Pay close attention to the questions and the interviewer's responses. Don't interrupt.

  • Use the STAR Method: When answering behavioural questions (e.g., "Tell me about a time when..."), structure your answers:

    • Situation: Set the scene.

    • Task: Describe your responsibility in that situation.

    • Action: Explain what you did.

    • Result: Detail the positive outcome of your actions.

  • Maintain Eye Contact: Shows confidence and engagement. For virtual calls, look at your camera.

  • Be Concise Yet Comprehensive: Answer questions fully, but avoid rambling.

  • Showcase Your 'Admin Queen' Skills: Highlight examples of your efficiency, attention to detail, and organisational prowess.

  • Be Honest: If you don't know something, admit it but offer to learn.

  • Thank the Interviewer: Express gratitude for their time at the end of the interview.

DON'Ts:

  • Don't Be Late: This creates a negative first impression.

  • Don't Badmouth Previous Employers: Keep it professional and positive.

  • Don't Lie or Exaggerate: Interviewers can often spot inconsistencies.

  • Don't Interrupt: Let the interviewer finish their question.

  • Don't Be Vague: Provide specific examples and quantifiable results where possible.

  • Don't Ask About Salary/Benefits Too Soon: Wait until an offer is on the table, or until the interviewer brings it up.

  • Don't Chew Gum or Fidget: These can be distracting.

  • Don't Forget Your Questions: Always have a few prepared.

Part 3: How to Close the Interview Effectively

The closing is your final opportunity to leave a strong, positive impression.

  1. Reiterate Your Interest:

    • Clearly state that you are very interested in the role and why. "Thank you for your time today, Bobby. After our discussion, I'm even more enthusiastic about the Fulfilment Manager role at Cucumber. My experience in [mention 1-2 key relevant skills from your CV] aligns perfectly with what you're looking for."

  2. Summarise Your Fit (Briefly):

    • Connect your skills directly to the company's needs. "I'm confident my administrative efficiency and experience in managing complex bookings will allow me to hit the ground running and significantly contribute to your team's success."

  3. Ask About Next Steps:

    • "What are the next steps in the hiring process, and when can I expect to hear from you?" This shows you're keen and organised.

  4. Thank Them Again:

    • A final, sincere thank you for their time and consideration.

  5. Send a Follow-Up Thank You Email (Crucial!):

    • Within 24 hours: Send a concise, professional email.

    • Personalise it: Reference something specific from your conversation.

    • Reiterate interest: Briefly mention why you're a strong fit.

    • Proofread: Ensure it's error-free.

By following these tips, you'll significantly increase your chances of success. Good luck, and remember, Ainsworth Recruitment is always here to support your career journey!
